Specialised Medical Imaging Services for women
South Coast Radiology’s 17 clinics including our Women’s Imaging Centre in Southport provide extensive and specialised services dedicated to the unique healthcare needs of women. Our sub-specialised Radiologists are highly skilled and experienced in women’s imaging, and continue to develop their knowledge through supported professional development programs. They work closely with referring practitioners to provide each patient with expert, safe, accurate and individualised care.
The Women’s Imaging Centre Southport (TWIC) remains the only dedicated diagnostic imaging facility on the Gold Coast and has been servicing women in the region for 15 years.
Women's Imaging Services
Please note; not all services are listed below, and not all services are available at every site.
3D Mammography
3D mammography is an advanced form of breast imaging that creates multiple thin-layer images of the breast. This technology allows radiologists to examine breast tissue in greater detail, helping improve cancer detection and reduce the chance of overlapping tissue hiding abnormalities. It is commonly used for breast cancer screening and investigation of symptoms such as lumps or breast changes.
Contrast Enhanced Mammography
Contrast enhanced mammography combines traditional mammography with a contrast agent injected into the bloodstream. The contrast highlights areas with increased blood supply, which may indicate abnormal tissue or cancer. This technique can provide additional diagnostic information when standard mammography or ultrasound findings need further evaluation.
Breast MRI
Breast MRI uses a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to create highly detailed images of breast tissue. It is one of the most sensitive imaging tests for detecting breast abnormalities and is often used for women at high risk of breast cancer or to further evaluate findings from other imaging tests.
Breast Procedures
The centre performs a range of image-guided breast procedures, such as biopsies or fine-needle aspirations. These procedures allow specialists to collect small samples of breast tissue for laboratory analysis, helping confirm diagnoses and guide treatment decisions.
Pelvic Ultrasound
Pelvic ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the uterus, ovaries and surrounding structures. This scan is commonly used to investigate pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, ovarian cysts, fibroids or other gynaecological conditions.
Pregnancy Ultrasound
3D pregnancy ultrasound provides detailed images of a developing baby during pregnancy. These scans can help assess fetal development and anatomy, while also giving parents a clearer visualisation of their baby during pregnancy.
CFTS Nuchal Translucency Scan
The Combined First Trimester Screening (CFTS) scan includes a nuchal translucency ultrasound performed early in pregnancy. This scan measures fluid behind the baby’s neck and is used alongside blood tests to assess the risk of chromosomal conditions such as Down syndrome.
Bone Mineral Densitometry
Bone mineral densitometry (DEXA) measures bone density and helps diagnose conditions such as osteoporosis. The scan is quick, painless and commonly recommended for women at risk of bone loss, particularly after menopause.
Frequently Asked Questions
A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray of the breast used to detect breast cancer or investigate symptoms such as lumps or changes in breast tissue. Screening mammograms are commonly recommended every 1–2 years for women over 50, or earlier if advised by your doctor.
3D mammography (breast tomosynthesis) creates detailed images of the breast in thin layers, allowing radiologists to examine tissue more clearly than with traditional 2D mammography. This can improve cancer detection and reduce false positives.
Women’s imaging services may include:
Digital mammography and 3D breast tomosynthesis
Breast ultrasound
Breast MRI
Pelvic ultrasound
Fertility and gynaecological imaging
Breast procedures such as fine needle aspiration or biopsy
These tests are often combined to provide the most accurate diagnosis.
Most imaging examinations require a referral from your GP or specialist. Your doctor will recommend the most appropriate scan based on your symptoms, medical history or screening needs.
Appointments can be booked online right here https://www.scr.com.au/book-now/ or by calling the bookings team. Your referring doctor will usually provide the referral required for the examination.
