What is Anti-Amyloid Therapy?
Anti-Amyloid Therapy (AAT) is a newer treatment approach for Alzheimer’s disease that targets amyloid plaques in the brain – a key feature associated with the condition.
Before commencing treatment, and during therapy, specialised imaging is required to:
- Confirm the presence of amyloid in the brain
- Assess suitability for treatment
- Monitor for treatment-related changes or side effects
- Support ongoing clinical decision making by your specialist team
This imaging is a critical part of safe and effective patient care.
Imaging Required for Anti-Amyloid Therapy
Patients receiving AAT will generally require two types of imaging:
1. PET/CT Amyloid Brain Scan
A PET/CT Amyloid Brain scan is used to detect amyloid plaque build-up in the brain.
This highly specialised scan helps doctors determine whether a patient may benefit from Anti-Amyloid Therapy.
Appointment Information
- Please allow approximately 2.5 hours for your appointment
- No fasting is required
- Patients should remove jewellery from the face and head, including earrings and facial piercings
Our Nuclear Medicine and PET team will guide patients through every step of the process and ensure they are comfortable throughout the examination.
2. MRI Brain Scan
MRI imaging is also required during treatment to monitor the brain for any changes that may occur throughout therapy.
These scans help provide important information to your treating specialist and support ongoing patient safety.

- Please remove all jewellery prior to the scan

To simplify the process for patients and referrers, South Coast Radiology has established a dedicated AAT Bookings Team.
Once your doctor sends through your referral, our team will contact you within two business days to arrange your appointment.
As multiple imaging appointments are often required throughout treatment, our dedicated coordinators help ensure appointments are managed efficiently and consistently over time.
