EOS Low-Dose Scoliosis Imaging
At South Coast Radiology, we offer EOS Low-Dose Scoliosis Imaging, an innovative X-ray system designed to capture high-quality, full-body images with significantly reduced radiation exposure.
This advanced technology allows for precise 2D and 3D evaluation of the spine, hips and legs while the patient is in a natural standing position, providing essential insights for diagnosing and monitoring scoliosis and other spinal conditions.
EOS imaging is particularly beneficial for children and adolescents who require ongoing spinal assessments, as it delivers up to 90% less radiation than traditional X-rays.
What is EOS Imaging?
EOS Imaging is a specialised, low-dose X-ray system that simultaneously captures front and side (biplanar) images of the entire body in a single scan.
It enables your doctor to:
- Assess spinal alignment and posture
- Measure leg length discrepancies and pelvic balance
- Monitor scoliosis progression or treatment outcomes
- Create accurate 3D spine models for surgical planning
The scan is quick, safe and comfortable, making it ideal for patients who require repeated imaging over time.
Why might I need EOS imaging?
EOS provides your healthcare team with clear, calibrated images to support accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
Your doctor or specialist may refer you for an EOS scan to:
- Diagnose or monitor scoliosis or kyphosis
- Assess spinal deformities or postural imbalances
- Evaluate orthopaedic alignment prior to surgery
- Monitor progress during bracing or physiotherapy treatment
- Measure limb length differences or pelvic tilt

On the day
Our radiographers will ensure you’re comfortable and still throughout the scan to achieve precise results.
- You’ll stand naturally inside the EOS scanner, while two low-dose X-ray beams capture images from the front and side simultaneously.
- The scan is painless and takes less than 20 seconds.
- You’ll be guided on how to stand for proper posture and alignment during imaging.
- Because EOS scans are performed in an upright position, the images show your spine and joints in their true weight-bearing state.
After your appointment
- You can return to normal activities immediately.
- The images are reviewed by one of our specialist radiologists, who will provide a detailed report to your referring doctor.
- Your doctor or orthopaedic specialist will discuss the results and any recommended next steps with you.
- EOS scans are digitally archived for comparison at future follow-up appointments, allowing accurate monitoring over time.
