Breast Stereotactic Procedures

At South Coast Radiology, our stereotactic breast procedures provide a highly accurate, minimally invasive way to take tissue samples (biopsies) from areas of concern within the breast.

Using precise 3D mammographic guidance, this technique allows our radiologists to target even the smallest abnormalities, helping to confirm or rule out the presence of breast disease quickly and safely.

We’re committed to providing compassionate, expert care in a calm and supportive environment across our Gold Coast clinics.

What is a Breast Stereotactic Procedure?

A stereotactic breast biopsy is a specialised imaging-guided procedure used to obtain tiny samples of breast tissue for examination under a microscope.

The term “stereotactic” refers to the 3D guidance system used — multiple low-dose X-ray images are taken from different angles, and computer technology pinpoints the exact location of the abnormality within the breast.

This precision enables your radiologist to collect accurate samples without the need for surgery.

Why might I need this procedure?

Your doctor may refer you for a stereotactic breast biopsy if:

  • A small abnormality or calcification has been detected on your mammogram
  • The area cannot be clearly seen on ultrasound
  • Further investigation is needed to confirm a diagnosis
  • Your radiologist recommends tissue sampling for peace of mind or treatment planning

This procedure helps ensure early and accurate diagnosis, allowing your doctor to provide the best possible care.

About Your Test

Before your appointment

Our team will explain everything clearly beforehand so you know exactly what to expect.

  • You can eat and drink normally on the day of your biopsy.
  • Wear a comfortable two-piece outfit, as you’ll need to remove clothing from the waist up.
  • Avoid wearing deodorant, talcum powder, or body lotion on your chest and underarms.
  • Let our staff know if you take blood-thinning medication (such as aspirin or warfarin), as you may need to pause this before the procedure.
  • Please bring any previous breast imaging or reports with you for reference.

On the day

  • You’ll be positioned comfortably, usually lying on your side or sitting upright.
  • Your breast will be compressed (similar to a mammogram) while multiple X-ray images are taken.
  • Using computer guidance, the radiologist inserts a needle through a tiny incision to collect several small tissue samples.
  • A small marker clip may be placed at the biopsy site for future reference. This clip is harmless and will not be felt after the procedure.
  • The procedure typically takes 20–30 minutes and is performed under local anaesthetic, so you’ll remain awake and comfortable.

After your appointment

  • You’ll be monitored briefly and then free to go home soon after
  • Mild bruising or tenderness may occur and can be eased with a cold pack or paracetamol.
  • Avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting for 24 hours.
  • Results are usually available to your referring doctor within a few working days.

Your doctor will discuss your biopsy results and any next steps with you.
