What is a CT Scan?
A CT (computed tomography) scan combines X-rays with advanced computer processing to create highly detailed 3D images of your body.
Unlike a standard X-ray that shows one image, a CT scan takes many thin “slices” from different angles giving your doctor a comprehensive view of what’s happening inside your body.
CT scans are commonly used to examine the chest, abdomen, pelvis, head, spine, and joints, and play an important role in diagnosing disease, injury, or internal abnormalities.

Why might I need a CT scan?
CT scans provide fast, accurate, and detailed information, making them invaluable in both emergency and routine medical care.
Your doctor may refer you for a CT scan to:
- Diagnose internal injuries, bleeding, or infection
- Detect and monitor tumours or other abnormalities
- Assess bone and joint problems
- Evaluate blood vessels or soft tissue structures
- Plan or guide surgery, radiation therapy, or interventional procedures
About Your Test
Before your appointment
Preparation depends on the type of CT scan. Our booking team will confirm any special instructions.
General guidelines:
- You may be asked to fast for 2–4 hours before your appointment.
- Some scans require an iodine-based contrast injection to enhance clarity. We’ll discuss this with you beforehand.
- Bring your referral, Medicare card, and previous imaging for comparison.
- Advise our staff if you are pregnant, diabetic, or have kidney problems or allergies (especially to contrast).
- If you have diabetes and take Metformin, you may be advised to stop it temporarily. Our booking team will guide you when making your appointment.
On the day
You’ll lie on a comfortable motorised table that moves slowly through the scanner.
The scanner is open, quiet, and well-lit (not enclosed like an MRI).
The scan itself usually takes 5–15 minutes.
If contrast is used, you may feel a brief warm sensation or metallic taste, which fades quickly.
You’ll be in constant communication with our technologist, who will monitor you throughout the procedure.
After your appointment
You can resume normal activities immediately.
If you received contrast, please drink plenty of water for the next 24 hours to help flush it from your system.
A specialist radiologist will review your images and provide a detailed report to your referring doctor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. CT scans use low radiation doses, carefully adjusted to each patient and type of exam.
All scans are performed following the ALARA principle — “As Low As Reasonably Achievable.” To put it in perspective, a typical CT scan delivers a dose similar to a few months of natural background radiation.
Some scans require a contrast injection to highlight blood vessels or internal organs. You’ll be advised beforehand, and our staff will explain the process and any sensations you may feel.
Reactions to contrast are very rare. You might feel a brief warm flush or metallic taste, which passes quickly.
Our clinics are fully equipped and staffed with trained professionals to manage any allergic responses if they occur.
Prior to your scan and to ensure optimal imaging, you may be asked to change into a gown. A change cubicle will be provided to ensure your privacy and you will be asked to bring your belongings will you, carry baskets are provided. You will be asked to place your belongings in a suitable location within the room for the duration of your scan. After your scan, you will be provided with a change cubicle to ensure your privacy. Please ensure you have all your belongings with you prior to leaving the department. If you accidentally leave anything behind, please contact our staff to advise and we will endeavour to locate your belongings and return them to you.

CT scans are generally avoided during pregnancy unless essential, and alternative imaging (like ultrasound) may be recommended.
