Services | Magnetic Resonance Imaging [MRI]

Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI is the latest and most advanced method of diagnostic imaging. MRI combines a powerful magnet, radio waves and a sophisticated computer to create highly detailed anatomical images of the body.

To get a medicare rebate on your MRI scan you must have a referral from a medical specialist. and attend our John Flynn Hospital , Tugun rooms.  A non rebateable MRI is available from Gold Coast Surgery Centre, Southport and HQ Building Robina.

What to Expect?

The scanning room is occupied by a large doughnut shaped magnet with a padded table which moves you into the centre of the magnet. The technologist will have visual and voice contact with you via a window and intercom for the duration of the examination. You will be given hearing protection, which you must wear. It is quite normal that you may still hear humming and thumping sounds while the machine is in operation.

It is very important that you remain relaxed, yet motionless during the scan. Most scans take 30 to 60 minutes to complete depending on the area of the body being examined.
On occasions, it may be necessary for us to administer an injection which temporarily changes the magnetic properties of the body tissue. In most cases the need for an injection can only be determined by our doctor at the time of your scan.

On completion of the examination you will feel no after effects and may resume normal activity.

Preparation

You may eat and drink as normal before and after the scan. If your MRI requires any specific dietary restrictions, our reception staff will let you know when you make your booking.

Patient's who suffer from claustrophobia may find it difficult to lie still in the machine for the required time. Please let us know prior to your appointment if you are claustrophobic so that we can discuss it with you.

Patients with certain implanted devices or prostheses will not be scanned due to the possible danger associated with the strong magnetic field. If you have any of the following or doubts about your suitability for MR Scanning, please contact us before coming in for your scan.
