Dental Imaging involves painless and simple examinations which can be referred by either a Medical Practitioner or Dentist as an overview of teeth and adjacent anatomy. It has become more commonly used with the increase in cosmetic and orthodontic dentistry.
OPG and CEPHALOGRAM
A lateral view of the head and soft tissues of the face most commonly used in conjunction with orthodontistry.
TMJ
A functional view of the joints of the jaw.
CONE BEAM DENTAL CT (ICAT)
Used for implant treatment, orthodontics and in neuromuscular and functional dentistry.
Cone Beam Dental CT provides exquisite high resolution 3D images and can discriminate between many types of tissue including bone, teeth, nerves and soft tissue. Image quality and functionality is comparable to Dental CT, but with a significantly lower radiation exposure. Dentists may refer for Cone Beam Dental CT (ICAT) which are situated at our Southport site.
Why is the examination required?
Dental examinations may be required for a number of different reasons relating to teeth, bone, nerves and soft tissue.
How is the scanning done?
The imaging is usually performed with the patient sitting or standing and takes less than a minute to perform. It is important that you remain still for the imaging as movement can degrade the quality of the study.
Who performs the scan?
The dental imaging examination will be performed by a specially trained radiographer, who is accredited and licensed by the relevant medical societies and government bodies.
What about the radiation dose?
The radiation dose received by a patient undergoing a dental examination is minimal in keeping with radiation safety requirements.
Is any special preparation required?
There is no preparation required for Dental Imaging. Patients are only asked to remove jewellery from the neck and head. Hair clips and dentures are also removed.
