Services | Computed Tomography
Computed Tomography uses an x-ray tube and array of detectors that rotate around your body to produce highly detailed cross sectional images of your anatomy. The new generation of multislice CT scanners can scan very high resolution images which allow us to take the data acquired and reproduce 3D images of any structure in the body.
What to Expect?
When you enter the room the radiographer will get you to lie on the CT table. The table then moves through the gantry while the doughnut shaped gantry that houses the xray tube and detectors takes the images.
During the scan you will hear the movement of the xray tube and detectors as they rotate. You will be asked to keep very still and you may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds. The time for the whole examination varies, but it is usually around 15 minutes.
Will I need an injection?
About 70% of CT examinations re quire an intravenous injection of contrast media. Contrast helps to show different blood flow characteristics of organs and tissues, and is a very important part of the CT examination.
Please contact us before you present for your scan if you are:
• Asthmatic
• Allergic to seafood / shellfish
• Have had a previous reaction to contrast media
• Taking any Type 2 Diabetes medication
Preparation
Preparations for CT examinations vary depending on what area of the body we are examining. Our reception staff will let you know of the specific preparation required when you make your booking.
If you are having a scan that may require an injection of contrast media we ask you to fast for 4 hours before your scan.
If we are scanning your abdomen, we may need you to drink some oral contrast to highlight the bowel for approximately 1 hour before we do your scan. This time has been incorporated into your booking time so there is no need to show up an hour early.
