A bone density test measures the density and strength of your bones and is used to diagnose osteoporosis. It is a simple, painless test that takes approximately 25 minutes.
The strength of your bones and your risk of breaking a bone is closely related to your bone density. Other factors that can influence bone density are various medical conditions and medications. Your Doctor may want to establish your baseline bone density to assess whether you need treatment with medication. A follow-up scan is usually performed in either one or two years time to assess the success of your treatment.
Is there a medicare rebate for Bone Density Testing?
Medicare has set a strict criterion that allows a percentage of the population to get a rebate for their test. The qualification for this rebate is based on certain medical conditions. When you present for your scan you will be asked to complete a questionnaire so we can assess your medical history and determine if you meet the Medicare criteria. If you answer “NO” to all of the questions on the form, you are unlikely to qualify for a Medicare rebate. Even if you answered “NO” to all the questions, the Bone Density test is still extremely useful for your Doctor in your health management. Please discuss this with our staff when you come in for your scan.
Depending on clinical indications, more than one bone density scan within a maximum 24 month period may NOT attract a Medicare Rebate. If you have had a scan within the past 24 months, please contact us for further details.
Is there any special preparation required?
There is no preparation required for a bone density test. You will not be required to undress but may be asked to remove metallic items such as belts.
